“Mrs President we ask from you to implement the recommendations we have written during the Regional Young Feminist Forum” said a student, Fjolla Vukshinaj in a confident voice at a meeting hosted by the President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga. Sometimes, the strength that comes from within the young women is surprising and inspiring at the same time. And I thought to myself, this is the new spirit of the women’s movement, this is what we should continue focusing on, support and empower.
Energy, Engagement, Empowerment, Education.
These were the key words of the two day Regional Young Feminist Forum held in Prishtina with about 40 young feminists gathered from Kosovo and the neighbouring countries such as Serbia, Macedonia and Croatia. The forum was organised by Kosova Women’s Network and supported by Kvinna till Kvinna.
The main topic of the forum was education and it served as a platform to discuss issues of concern for young women, to exchange experiences and advocate to the relevant actors by ways of meeting with high officials and being present in the public through media and a street action. The young feminists wrote a joint statement with concrete recommendations.
Another aspect of the forum was cross-regional dialogue and cooperation. The president of Kosovo supported this aspect and looking at Gordana, a participant from Serbia and using Gordana’s language she said “Why not have the next forum in Belgrade? This way, bridges of cooperation can be built among younger generations”.
This Feminist Forum was well accepted widely, invading space in most Kosovo media and I believe it served as an ice-breaker to some taboos associated with feminism and cross regional cooperation.
I also want to believe that this initiative has paved the way to other feminist endeavours and joint actions in the region. With Kvinna till Kvinna’s support.
